NEW YORK (Billboard) - Beck, Wilco, Widespread Panic and Primus have joined the lineup for the first Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on August 22-24. Radiohead, Tom Petty and Jack Johnson were previously announced as headliners. Outside Lands will also feature performances from the likes of Manu Chao, Ben Harper, Steve Winwood, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Drive-By Truckers, Cafe Tacuba, Devendra Banhart, Regina Spektor, Cold War Kids, and Nellie McKay.
Fred Thompson heads back to Hollywood
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson is returning to his career as an actor and signed a deal to be represented by the William Morris Agency, the talent group said on Monday. Thompson, a former U.S. senator from Tennessee, is best known in the entertainment world for portraying New York District Attorney Arthur Branch on the television crime drama “Law & Order,” but has appeared in numerous films and TV shows over the years.
Clay Aiken heads “Here” on next album
NEW YORK (Billboard) - Just as his stint starring in the Broadway hit “Spamalot” concludes, “American Idol” veteran Clay Aiken will return with his first album of entirely new material since 2003’s “Measure of a Man.” “On My Way Here,” due May 6 via 19 Recordings/RCA, will likely include the title track and a song called “Ashes,” but no other details about the project have yet been made available.
ABC extends Sunday winning streak
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - ABC’s reality block powered the network to its fifth Sunday victory in a row, with freshman series “Oprah’s Big Give” and “Here Come the Newlyweds” leveling off in the Nielsens. ABC won the night among total viewers (9 million), although “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (11.1 million) was down 1 million from the previous week. “Oprah’s Big Give” (9.9 million) and “Here Come the Newlyweds” (6.9 million) were each up a bit.
George Michael plans first U.S. tour in 17 years
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - George Michael has a lot of “Faith” in his North American fans. The British pop singer on Monday unveiled plans for his first tour of the United States and Canada in 17 years, beginning June 17 at San Diego Sports Arena. The 22-date arena trek runs through August 3 at the BankAtlantic Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Beatles’ friend Neil Aspinall dies in New York
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Neil Aspinall, a close friend and former road manager of The Beatles who was sometimes referred to as the fifth member of the band, died in New York of lung cancer, former band members said on Monday. He was 66. Aspinall became road manager and personal assistant for the Fab Four after going to school in Liverpool with Paul McCartney and George Harrison. He was a longtime friend, confidant and overseer of The Beatles’ business empire, Apple Corps Ltd., for 40 years.
CBS cancels “Jericho” despite fan fervor
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - CBS has nuked “Jericho,” the low-rated post-Armageddon drama that was briefly brought back from the dead by fan demand. The network will air the season finale on Tuesday, one of two that was shot in the event either of a renewal or cancellation.
Lawyer in Britney Spears case loses appeal
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California court on Monday denied an attorney’s bid to challenge an order that gave control of troubled pop star Britney Spears’ personal and business affairs to her father, Jamie Spears. But attorney Jon Eardley vowed to continue his battle on behalf of the 26-year-old singer, saying he will now challenge the conservatorship order on two key issues.
Hulk Hogan sued by family of Florida crash victim
ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Reuters) - Pro wrestling and reality TV star Hulk Hogan was sued in Florida on Monday by the family of a man who was critically injured in the crash of a car driven by Hogan’s teenage son. The suit filed in Pinellas County by the parents of John Graziano says Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, was responsible for the August 26 crash in Clearwater, Florida, because he knew his son liked to speed and race other drivers.
Husband of singer Bailey Rae found dead
LONDON (Reuters) - The husband of British soul singer Corinne Bailey Rae was found dead and another man was arrested on suspicion of supplying drugs, police said on Sunday. West Yorkshire police said they had been called to an apartment in the Hyde Park area of Leeds in northern England on Saturday, where they found the body of a 31-year-old man. They later identified him as Jason Rae.
